Event’s presentation

Following the success of our first
in October 2020, we invite you to participate to the first anniversary session on Tuesday, October 26th 2021.

You’ll hear from four industry experts on probiotic market trends, Procelys’ long-standing expertise in fermentation,
quality yeast-based nutrients for supporting probiotic strains, and a case study from a prominent probiotic producer.

4 talks of 25-minute each will be streamed live on LiveStorm Tuesday, October 26th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM CET.

the context

The global probiotics market is a USD $1 billion market. One of the largest
drivers behind probiotic use is probiotics’ ability to boost immune function. Preliminary reports connecting
probiotics to better outcomes after COVID-19 infection have boosted global probiotics sales in 2020.

To be successful in a crowded landscape, probiotics producers must effectively please consumers while also implementing cost-effective production strategies that optimize both quality and productivity of their strains. One of the most important factors for producing consistent, stable, high-quality probiotics is a high-quality, clean nitrogen source.

Developing a relationship with an established, long-standing,
and trusted partner that can deliver the quality solution can
ensure probiotics strains production’s success.

Program of the event

During this half-day, virtual live event, hear from industry leaders from Euromonitor, CHR Hansen India,

Lesaffre and Procelys by Lesaffre. You’ll come away with a better understanding of the current market

and expected trends and how you can optimize your probiotics strains for success in a booming market.

10:00 AM to 10:30 AM CET

The emergence of the global pandemic has boosted consumer interest in being healthy. As a result, demand for targeted functionality as a key component of wellbeing has been expedited.

Among all, immunity has been one of the biggest concerns during the COVID-19 health crisis and has the potential to spur innovation moving forward. This will benefit ingredients that have been traditionally associated with immune support, including probiotics.

This presentation will give an overview of the increased interest in immunity boosting products and the performance of probiotic-related categories like yoghurt. It will also delve into new opportunities for manufacturers moving forward.

Emerging scientific evidences suggest that the supplementation of probiotics has positive effects on the gut microbiota and overall health. Moreover probiotics are one of the fastest growing ingredients, and ever more people are becoming aware of good bacteria.

At Chr. Hansen, we have over 145 years of expertise in developing and producing bacteria that may support human health. In order to confer health benefits, probiotics must be safe, clinically documented, live when consumed and manufactured with highest quality.

The probiotic strains we develop at Chr. Hansen are supported by strong science, are clinically documented, shelf stable, and are manufactured to the highest quality. We will be discussing and sharing our experiences in developing probiotics.

About Furqan Ali :

Furqan Ali is a Senior Scientist at Chr. Hansen, India, focusing on the new production process technologies for probiotics and dairy cultures via fermentation and encapsulation approach.

He holds Ph.D., degree in biotechnology from Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR, Jammu, India) with specialization in Microbiology, Biochemistry and Industrial Biotechnology (Fermentation). He has 9+ years of industrial experience (post- PhD.,) in probiotics, prebiotics, and functional food product applications studies (preclinical and clinical).

His research expertise includes the development and commercialization of new probiotic strains, natural prebiotic fibres, herbal products, lead molecules, conduct pre-clinical (in-vitro and animal studies) and human clinical studies to support and validate the commercial product clinical claims such as management of diabetes, cardiovascular health, weight management, skin health, digestive disorders (IBS, functional abdominal pain and functional dyspepsia) and dyslipidemia.

Effect of NuCel® yeast based nutrients on probiotic modes of action in vitro

Dr. Ramona Cernat

Lesaffre, R&D Manager, corporate R&D – the In Vitro Platform

Probiotics are becoming increasingly important in basic and clinical research, but they are also a subject of considerable economic interest due to their expanding popularity. They are live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit to the host. There are different mechanisms of action through which probiotics can impact human health such as inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, immunomodulatory effects, stimulation of gut barrier function and metabolic function.

Although in vitro studies or animal models cannot prove a probiotic effect, they can be used to characterise a possible mechanism of probiotic action, determine the safety of probiotic microorganisms or convey other knowledge of probiotic strains.

NuCel® is a specifically designed range of yeast based nutrients (YBN) that Procelys provides for the probiotics industry. Besides investigations into YBN influence on probiotic strain industrial production, Procelys has also started pioneering investigations into YBN effect on probiotic modes of actions such as the immunomodulatory effects and the stimulation of gut barrier function.

This work is being conducted in collaboration with the In Vitro Platform – Lesaffre corporate R&D, at the preliminary data presented here indicates the ability of the selected NuCel® nutrients to modulate the intestinal epithelial integrity and the expression of anti-inflammatory IL10 in Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) and Lactobacillus plantarum BC3019 strains. The differences in key performance parameters (biomass and metabolite) of L. plantarum BC3019 strain in the presence of the selected NuCel® nutrients are also presented.

About Ramona :

Former Associate Professor, PhD in Microbiology at the University of Bucharest – Romania, Ramona received in 2008 a Marie Curie Intraeuropean postdocoral fellowship (7th Framework Programme, European Commission) for studying the effect of antibiotic administration on the composition of the human intestinal microbiota, the prevalence of antibiotic resistance bacteria and the development of antibiotic- associated diarrhoea.

This fellowship, hosted by the Rowett Research Institute – Aberdeen, UK was followed in 2012 by a postdoctoral fellowship on sub-acute ruminal acidosis at the same institute, which included an insightful first year experience in biotech environment at Chr Hansen – Denmark. The biotech experience continued in December 2014 when Ramona joined AHI department at Chr Hansen, first as scientist and, from May 2015 as senior scientist. In December 2017 Ramona took up her current position as manager and creator of the In Vitro Platform in corporate R&D at Lesaffre International, France.
